Hi,

I have a hen that has been limping for a while, thought it was an injury, but then the padding between the toes started to swell on its left foot. In the last few days it has grown significantly.

I read an article on BYC about swelling between the toes, and TwoCrows said it might be MS. All the symptoms match and my other chickens are getting it too. I have 11 in my flock.

Some of them have it on the right foot but not the left. On one chicken the rear facing toe is entirely swollen.

I'm locating some Denegard as quickly as possible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

BTW I'm new here but have been a long time reader of BYC.

Thanks

It does look like bumblefoot that I have seen in a few of my chickens. Most of the time bumblefoot is on the foot pad, but can occasionally be between toes or be both on the pads and between toes. Soaking the foot in warm Epsom salts or other disinfecting solutions such as Betadine or chlorhexidene can be good. Sometimes it is necessary to do the surgery, or at least remove the scab and squeeze out any pus. MS is fairly common, and can be diagnosed with testing from a local extension agent, NPIP, or the state dept. of health. Usually with MS, the joints of the feet and legs will be swollen.

I don't know. I've had chickens for about 8 years now and have not come across something like this so I really don't know.

Can you get a picture of the bottom of the foot?
Is there a little dark scab somewhere on the bottom?

Thank you, I'll start treating for bumblefoot and monitor. I haven't seen any scabs, but I will check again.

Thanks again

Here is the bottom side of the foot of the one that is limping. It does have a black spot. I saw this when I first noticed it i ran my finger over it and didn't feel anything, so I thought it was dirt or something.

I didn't think that little spot could be an infection, now I know. After doing some research I discovered that my roosts are way too high in just a new coop I had built about 5 months ago.

So now to tend to my "outbreak" of bumblefoot.
