My hen is almost one year old and she has a swollen lump between her toes. After researching online, I was certain she had bumble foot…so I posted to Reddit for guidance on the back yard chickens subreddit. I was told by redditors that they were unsure If this was bumble foot and to post my question here..so here I am!

She has a normal gait and no other symptoms. She is jumping down from the roost every morning just fine. She just has this nasty looking bump on her foot. I have been doing Epsom salt baths once a week for the past three weeks and applying triple antibiotic ointment.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Hi,

Getting bumblefoot on top of the foot or between toes is kind of unusual but not impossible. Usually they get it on their pad on the bottom of their foot/feet. That really doesn't look like it either to me, especially if you've been soaking it daily for three weeks.

It looks a bit red in that area so might be infected. Is that white spot soft like a blister or is it hard?

In case you'd think it is bumblefoot, here's an article from a member about her adventure with it and getting it out.

Bumblefoot is an infection that causes a black scab to form over a pus deposit. That white blister-like lesion is not bumblefoot, or at least not the classic bumblefoot lesion.

Get some Blue-kote if you're in the US or gentian violet if you're in Europe or Asia. It's an anti-fungal and antiseptic. Paint it on the lesion every day. It wouldn't hurt to soak the foot every day before painting the foot.

If the lesion is a fungus or infection, the Blue-kote will shrink it. If it's a cyst, it will remain the same. Since it doesn't seem to be bothering her, it's likely something benign that she can live with.

Thank you! I will get some blue kote today and start applying!
