Prolapse and a Tumor??

Hi,
Found my 3 year old hen (Dominant Copper Breed) with a prolapsed vent today. She is otherwise active, preening, eating, alert, etc. She has rarely ever laid eggs her whole life.
I brought her in for an Epsom salt bath with a touch of lemon essential oil and while cleaning the area found this hanging by some connective type tissue from the prolapse and then it snapped off. From there, I was able to clean everything and get prolapse back in with some aquaphor ointment/vaseline and so far it has stayed in although I am sure there will be more to the process. Anyone have a clue what this is that came off/out? It feels like a tumor as it is relatively solid/firm.

I agree, it looks like it may be Lash Material.

What do you mean it snapped off - I assume the connective tissue was probably a "tail", did that also get expelled, or did that retract back inside the vent when the prolapse went back in?

Since she did prolapse and was having a hard time, I give Extra Calcium as suggested previously. At least 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily for 5 days. This may help her expel anything else that may be in the oviduct and it can also help with retention of the prolapse.

IF that "tail" did go back inside, I'd also think seriously about giving a round of antibiotics.

I'm guessing the circled portion was attached to the "tail", likely it was something similar to the next photo, but of course thickened a bit since it does seem like this is Lash.

Thank you. I did already start giving her calcium with vitamin D yesterday as well and will continue. Yes, the tail did go back in so I will reach out to the vet today to get some antibiotics started. Thank you again! This page (and everyone on it) are so very helpful. Hoping for the best although I know what we are facing is not good in a lot of cases. I will be sure to loop back around to update everyone.

Hopefully she'll just expel the piece that snapped off, but sometimes something like that can encourage infection, so I'm glad you have a vet you can reach out too.

Keep us posted on how she's doing.
