Raccoon attacked Rooster=broken wing & now drooling

So happy to hear he may be improving! I always say I would try to help them if they are fighting to live still.

I recently followed the journey of a chicken whose wing was broken and hung low for a very long time before it healed. But it did heal. There was not much to be done for it besides binding it in to the body. That can be a struggle if you don’t have secure wrap, though. It also may not make a huge difference depending on where the break is.

Post number 5 here has a splinting manual and post number 10 has a diagram of the wing that may be helpful for you:

UPDATE:

Well, sad news today. He passed away last night. My boys found him this morning. 😭

I guess he was just too old to recover.

He most likely had internal damage that we couldn't see or address.

But he saved his hens & died a hero!

Now we're without a rooster, though. *Sigh* I'm worried even more about our hens now.

My boys wanted to take some pics before he passed, just in case... So glad we did... I'm attaching one. Wish I'd have gotten a side view... His tail feathers were beautiful!

I'm so sorry. You did your best for him and I'm sure he felt loved and safe as he passed :hugs

did you know, hens can stay fertile for up to a month?
in other words, I bet you could hatch some chicks and, with luck, get a rooster who is just as good as his father was. it sounds like you had a good boy.

This is a good point! Let your hens that have been bred by him hatch eggs and you might get another perfect roo!

I’m so sorry to hear that he passed. 10 is such an impressive age for a chicken, you did well with him and that age is a testament to the life you gave him. What a handsome little fellow. I hope you can find comfort in the pictures and memories you have of him and know that his last days were filled with love as is evident by the picture that your boys insisted was taken :hugs
