Red Chantecler Bantam Project

We are working on a Red Chantecler Bantam project. We are using two separate matings. First is a Buckeye Bantam male over a Rose Comb Buff Leghorn Bantam female. We are also using a Buff Wyandotte Bantam male over a Buckeye hen. The chicks we have hatched are a medium red similar to a New Hampshire and all have a cushion comb. There is more work needed to complete this new variety; however, we would like some help. If you are interested, please contact us, but only if you understand that this is a project.

Our Leghorn actually lays a brown egg, so is perfect for this project. When you cross a Pea Comb (PP) with a Rose Comb (RR) you get a Cushion Comb (PPRR). So most, if not all, chicks from these matings will have a Cushion Comb. Type is still an unknown, but we will be close. We will take the best of the F1 and mate together to improve the type and color. We may consider an addition cross with a Partridge Chantecler Bantam with the F1 or F2. The photos are of day old Red Chantecler Bantams and an artist idea of what the Red Chantecler should look like. It should be noted that Ideal Poultry created the Large Fowl Red Chanteclers (we have some juvenile); however, the Red Chantecler Bantams are out of our top Exhibition Buckeye Bantams, Buff Wyandottes and Buff Leghorns. We have placed best of variety numerous times. We welcome you to join us in this project. Or at least to offer your input.

Jim,

I would love to help but honestly I have to many breeds/varieties to add another project. I am looking forward to seeing how this project goes. How many years do you expect the project to take? I wish you the best in your project.

Ryan

Right now it is a waiting game on the F1 maturity. If type and color is correct, tehn we ahve it. However, it is always an ongoing project to improve each generation of any breed/variety.

Jim, this sounds like a cool project. I love the buff chantecler. Just wondering why you didn't use buff chantecler and work on darkening the color to an outcross? Good luck with this. I look forward to seeing them. Buff and red varieties are my favorites. I thought about raising buff chantecler for a long time and just never got there.

Well the idea was to create a Buff Chantecler bantam, but have not been able to locate a Buff Cornish Bantam. Dan Honour suggested I use what I have...the Buckeye. We will be working on the Buff Chantecler bantam as well, just was easier to get the Red. It may be a long term project or it may be a short term. We have Walter Franklin and Bro Winfred's notes on how they got the white and buff large fowl. Meanwhile we are also working to improve the large fowl Buff Chanteclers. Next year will tell how far we have come and how far we have to go. It is actually alot simplier than the Lavender project. We have a blueprint already. You started from scratch with no blueprint. Just an idea.

I dont think its possible to get Red in a F1 if you are breeding to True strong Buff birds like Leghorns, their Pheomelanin Diluters will not let you have Red in the F1.. this can change at F2... but good luck

Self buff birds are belived to have Dominant Di(Dilute) and Dominant Cb(Champagne Blond)...

Jim,
Kind of curious why did you take the route of a Buckeye and not the Rhode Island Red, was it to make the Cushion Comb?
I would think that you get close to what you are looking for by crossing a Rose Comb Red with a Dark Cornish.
