Hello, chickenfolk,

I picked up some red jungle fowl at a feed store. They're about a month and a half old now. I've been raising them like regular chickens, feeding them chick starter crumbles. Should I be feeding them anything else?

I have two cockerels and two pullets, it seems. One pullet's beak has a space between the upper and lower beak when closed. She eats and drinks fine, so I'm hoping this is nothing to worry about. Thanks!

OOoh they are gorgeous!

They are on the correct feed. You can start offering them 1 inch long grass clippings and other treats but they will need some chick grit if you do this. Don't feel you really need to push treats on them but I do like to get grass into them for the vitamins early on, about one week of age.

Beak defects sometimes get worse as they get older, but as long as she can eat ok she should be fine.

I have raised some from Cackle Hatchery in a brooder and ultimately free-range with a combination of American Dominiques and American Games. They adapted well and were flighty yet tamable. They were all picked off as young adults in by Great-Horned owl because they would not stay where dog could protect them during fall and during winter they were targeted by Red-tailed Hawk because they would not use cover like games did.

They train very easily like games which means to me they are smart.

Yes they get raised differently, you need to get with BYC : "Resolution". He is an absolute expert with Jungle Fowl. Will probably tell you to use the Forage Cake products. Resolution has many years experience with many kinds of Jungle fowl and you can take what he says to the bank. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/402512/quechua-tojuda-ameraucana-easter-eggers-in-vino-veritas

Thanks, all! I'll have to find a way to separate the roos soon, I image. They live outside now (I'm in west central FLA). They have access to grass, sandy soil (grit?), and grasshoppers when I catch them! I put one of the roos with my leggern and oeg red pyle pullets, and they didn't seem to like him in there. I'll keep em under cover, owing to all the hawks and owls I see in the neighborhood. Thanks again!

haha those are not even 75% they are mixed and they claim being sold as red jungle fowls but mixed with bantam and hybrid red jungle fowls never buy "red jungle fowl" from hatchery or feed store.
