We had a Red Racer in the front court yard this morning, around 5 foot long (couldn't believe how fast it was). It went over the fence before we could kill it. I'm afraid it went into the back yard. Hubby looked and couldn't find it. The girls pen is made out of hardware cloth do you think it could get in there? The girls are almost full grown now so they aren't small.

Quick update, I was letting Max out in the back yard and saw the snakes tail going into my flowerbed by the back gate.Screamed for hubby who looked and didn't see it then I saw the tail going under the gate. Once again hubby couldn't find it! Then he said I was being paranoid! Really ****** me off! Half an hour later we were leaving for the feed store and guess what was under his truck! This time he saw it! Ha I know a snake when I see one! Last seen heading towards the neighbors lets hope it keeps going.

Just leave it alone, and don't kill it for no reason. Red racers aren't a threat to anything past maybe a small chick. They aren't even constrictors, and would have no way of killing a decent sized chicken.

Snakes aren't a threat to grown chickens. Too big to eat. Most of the snakes you see around are not poisonous, so they present no danger to people and pets.

They probably cannot get through the hardware cloth and eat any eggs. But that is really a separate problem.

Here the snakes keep the chipmunks and rabbits under control. The chickens ate a black snake last year. This year they just stood and watched one slither through the yard, through the run, and into a neighbor's yard.

I would just ignore them, they aren't interested in you.
