Do you have a retriever?

My Golden, Jenny, loves having things in her mouth. She has a stuffed duck and she's just so happy when she has it. She also uses it to communicate. She brings it to me and moans happily, wagging her whole back end, and dancing with her front feet and grinning with her eyes half shut. It means she wants me to go outside with her but I usually don't bc it's either 10:00 at night and I'm in bed or it's 5:00 in the morning, and ... I'm in bed! I tell her she's a big girl and she can go out without me and then I guess she does, lol.
Awww that’s sweet lol our old dog used to love carrying stuff around in his mouth too. He was a yellow Lab hahah and Brew brings me presents when I come home LOL I think it’s a retriever thing maybe

Question: have you found your Labs smelly and/or really greasy/oily? I’ve heard from multiple people now, not just one, that it’s pretty common but I never remember that with our old Lab or our last Lab mix that had the thick Lab coat. Brew has more the pit coat and definitely doesn’t have that. So I’m just curious. Cause I was also a lot younger when we had the other two dogs so I could just be too young to remember. I know they’re supposed to be somewhat oily to repel the water or whatever but does that mean they smell or feel oily/greasy to the touch? Do you think diet has anything to do with it? Just curious. Thanks.

No, we have four and when they're clean they don't smell at all. They have a dog smell when they're wet or after they've been out in the kennel, but that's it. I'm sure diet does have to do with it. Avery can go months without bathing in the house and never smells or feels greasy.
They do shed a lot but only twice a year. Just before summer and in the fall. I've also noticed they do a short shed during their heat cycle but I think that's more like stress related. Avery has an American lab coat, Molly has half and half with English, and the other two have full English coats. The English are really thick coated with a lot of coarse gaurd hair on the back. I've never noticed any smell or greasiness with any of their different coats. But our last lab passed away in probably 2017 or 2018 maybe, and she was greasy sometimes and had a corn chip smell. She had bad thyroids, but my parents always used to feed our dogs cheapy dog food like olroy mainly or sometimes Purina dog chow. I think that had a ton to do with it. I really never even thought much about their food at the time, but after switching them it's amazing how much of a difference in their overall appearance and health from what I remember back with Dakota and our other dogs years ago.
