Hello, I know it really just depends on the rooster but I would like to hear how your rhode island red roosters personalities are before I get a rooster. Are they nice to the hens and to humans or are yours aggressive ?
I've had RIRs roosters that were docile and others that were very aggressive both to humans and to the hens. It depends partly on their breeding. Hatchery grade RIRs tend to be more aggressive than heritage RIRs bred by reputable breeders that meet APA standards. In my personal experience, it you are looking for a gentle rooster, you would be better going with one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Silkies, Cochins, Brahmas, Sussex, or Faverolles. Keep in mind though that there can always be exceptions with any breed. If you don't mind having a mixed breed rooster, there are always loads of unwanted ones on the market and you should be able to find one that is calm and gentle.
