Six years ago last April, I came home with two chicks from the local farm store -- Salmon Faverolles that I named Celeste and Camille. I fell in love with their fluffy faces and feet -- and their awkward gait when they ran. They have been inseparable their entire lives.

Two days ago, something seemed off with Celeste. Last night, she had no interest in dried mealworms and instead of taking her usual spot on the roost, she settled down in the nest box. When I got up this morning, I could hear her repeatedly making an odd cry in the coop. She stood in the corner and nothing seemed to make her feel better.

About half an hour ago, I was working outside and didn't hear Celeste crying anymore. I am grateful that she passed quickly. I had carried her out of the coop and placed her in the run this morning; she died in the sunshine with her feet on rich, dark earth. I left Camille in the run with her so she wasn't by herself.

Camille has never been alone in a coop; with Celeste's passing, Camille is the sole survivor of a coop that once held four hens. I need to find a compatible coop mate among the other hens.

RIP, my lovely girl; you brought me a lot of joy in your short life!!

I'm so sorry this happened :(. These things suck, I had something similar happen to a hen about a month ago. She was also old and I saw she was slowing down. Something told me not to treat her for anything and just let her pass and make her as comfortable as I could.
As much as it hurts watching a chicken pass Sometimes its best to let them go.
