Hi everyone! I have a rooster who is 23 weeks old, he has just started crowing about a week ago. He was just getting the hang of the rhythm of a crow when I noticed he seemed to have a sore throat or maybe losing his voice? I'm not sure if this is normal as I haven't owned a rooster before. Thanks in advance!

What breed is he? Can you post a video of him crowing? (Unfortunately, you can't upload videos directly to a thread, but a YouTube link is fine.)

Typically, a rooster's crow changes as they mature and their voice better develops. Some roosters have better crows than others, and sometimes that's based on breed. To me, what you're describing sounds like a Barred Rock crow.

It is very normal for them to sound croaky the first couple of weeks/months

Hi, thanks for replying! He is a silver laced wyandotte, but I think he may also be crossed with a gold laced wyandotte? Not a Barred Rock though... I'll see what I can do about getting a video of him! Thanks!

Just recorded him, here is the link :)

Do you happen to have a video of him before this voice “drop”/shift?

I had an Oriental Gamefowl cockerel who was even more raspy than yours while he was getting the hang of it. He grew out of it, and is now a very healthy, almost 3 year old rooster. I wouldn’t worry much if he’s acting healthy otherwise, just keep an eye on it
