My Rooster is a good boy. He is about 15 months old, we've had him since he was a few weeks old. He typically crows in the morning, and then 4-5 times a day before dark. Usually when he can hear the rooster about half a mile away. They 'talk' to each other sometimes.

But yesterday he started crowing NON STOP. Like, every 4 minutes. Even as early as 5am, when he typically won't start until a little after 7am. He's crowed probably 20 times and it's 11:30am.

Why is he doing this? I don't want to butcher him but the only reason he's alive is because his crow was weak (like a dying cat) and he's sweet. If he's just going to stand there and crow non stop....he'll have to go. I don't "need" him since I don't want fertilized eggs. But I like him.

He is separated by about 5 feet from the coop that our pullets are in. He enjoys watching them during the day, and guards them too. My husband mentioned that maybe he, uh....wanted to be with the ladies? They are almost 10 weeks old. Could this be the sudden change? Because he can see them but not get to them? They have been outside, but separated since they were about 4 weeks old, but like I said...this just started.

The sudden increase in crowing is strange, and your husband's theory might apply. My roosters can crow more when some unusual activity is going on in the area. Hopefully he will calm down. I like my roosters' crowing, but their coop is not near my bedroom.

Considering the weather your folks have been having, do you think that may be upsetting him? You are from TN right?

Today is cool and calm. We had some really awful storms last night, but today we are clear. He just seems odd. It's not like him. He's typically walking around looking for bugs and weed treats, but he's either sitting in the door of his coop crowing, or standing beside the fence near the pullets crowing. I almost want to agree with his theory, that he's trying to get the ladies to come into his run/coop. But I'm not ready to add them. How do I stop this? lol

Miwest- I would normally agree, but this is unusual for him. He's never been a loud rooster. He is very gentle. You can just walk over and pick him up. He is not flashy or loud, until yesterday.

There are a few reasons I can think of; wanting to be with the ladies, something out of the normal that's bothering him, or perhaps his communicating with a rooster in the distance. Had this happen once where they crowed, back and forth, for what seemed like days.

I have four roos, and they crow all day. They start at 4am and the last crow is about 7pm. With the amount I have I figured it was in competition with eachother and they are in with their girls. I think it is also just a roo thing, they like to hear themselves talk.

OK, I can understand if your rooster is just loud and crows a lot. But what I'm saying is that this rooster, mine, suddenly overnight changed his pattern and has become a totally different rooster. He is way past sexual maturity age, so it's not that, we have not gotten a new rooster, moved him, changed his bedding or anything. Seems like nobody else finds it unusual except me.

he is still just walking around out there aimlessly crowing every 2 minutes.

try putting a visual barrier between his area and the girls, so he can't see them, and see if it makes a difference. take a quick peek around his area's perimeter too, make sure there aren't any signs of visitors or anything that might set him off. or maybe he's just bored =/ it's too bad we can't just ask em what's going on.
