Oh yeah, I know they can get in the run, but I don’t have that problem during the day ever. And they’re always closed up by dark until the sun comes up. I’ve been working on closing it in but getting there. Because it’s just netting on the top. I just want to see how to fix his wounds first.

I bought them inside for cleaning them up. I don’t know if I should take him back out or keep them in the kettle inside because it’s in the teens right now. There’s no bone sticking out, but it looks like some meat is ripped out.

Blue kote! Use it for treatment it will stain the area to prevent anyone bothering him and it works magic in healing.

Yes, I love blue coat and I always have it on hand until of course right now and I’m out of like everything apparently I’ve got a meeting. I can’t miss at work so I’m headed there that way. I’ll have my vehicle back after that and I can go get him some medicine.

He is really not happy about being inside. He’s in there crowing now I just wish it wasn’t so cold because I don’t think he still bleeding. I think it’s everything thawing out. Which is weird because it doesn’t get that cold inside their coop, but I guess it froze pretty much as soon as he went out in the 12° weather.

If he gets to worried being awy from his flock while treating him can you bring an older, calm hen in to keep him company in a separate cage?

I don’t recommend BluKote except for hiding red areas to prevent pecking, or to treat minor scrapes or cuts. It should not be put on deep wounds as these. Plus the blue dye gentian violet prevents you from seeing the color of the wound, to see how it is healing. I would probably leave them inside the coop as much as possible as long as the predator could get to them. He probably could go out to the coop inside a dog crate if the coop has enough room.

Yes, I’m on my way home where it’s at least hit in the 30s for the day finally so I feel better about letting him out. I’m gonna work on him a little more when I get home and see if he’ll fit in my dog kennel. I’ve never had to put him in there. It fits the hens but I’ll figure out a way because I know both the ladies and him are not liking being separated. Weird for them.

Looks like the back of his comb is ripped or torn.
Combs bleed a LOT.

The blood and meat looks like frozen coagulated blood. I'd clean him up really well, check to make sure there aren't any wound hidden under all his beautiful feathers.

If it's just the comb that's injured, it should heal o.k. with minimal care. Clean with saline, then apply some triple antibiotic ointment or spray with a little Vetericyn. Watch that the hens don't pick at the comb, they tend to pick at wounds on roosters and rooster let them. I've had to keep roosters separate from hens and let combs heal up completely because the hens would pick and eat at the comb (they like blood).

If the blood is difficult to get out of his feathers, use a little Peroxide on just the feathers to help remove the blood. For anything around the face/eyes, use Saline to clean with.

Holy molly, keep that bird inside, I would get that all washed off and then treat it like you would a wound on yourself. Peroxide flush, clean paper towel blot dry-ish and then triple antibiotic if you have a spray like a bactine use it. Then goop it up with ointment. The body heat will melt it in. Give him some baby asprin and keep inside, you don't want flies anywhere around this bird. He looks alert and I think you will get him to pull through. These chickens are tough, really remarkable. I saved one from a horrible Coyote attack, and many other injuries through the years. With supportive care he will pull through..

It’s like almost liked he cleaned himself up before I got home. I mean, yeah there was some to clean off and gave him some wound medication and it was about to be dark. The other girls were roasting so I put him in there with them. They all seem very happy about that, so in the morning, I’m gonna go out there before it becomes light in the morning and see I might need to put them in kennel inside the coop before heading to work
He seems to be doing so much better
I think since he was out for a good 10 minutes before I realized it all his blood he had on him was flash froze so it looked really worse than it was maybe
