Rose Comb Legbar Thread

Got a couple cockerel comb pics. First is a good comb that will probabky twist as the crest comes in. The second is a bad rose comb that is too smooth and has an inverted spike (he was culled).

It's been a couple of months. How are the RC Legbars looking now? Curious.

Interesting to me... I had 6 cockerels in my spring hatch and one had the floppiest comb... I figured "that's a for sure cull" but two months later he's the only one with a crest and the comb has straightened out.... nothing to do with RC but it surprised me.

They are doing great. I am down to the top 3 cockerels already and maybe 6 pullets. In all of hatching season, I averaged about 15% single combs from a RC male bred to single combed hens. Out of the rose combed chicks, only 1 pullet had an inverted spike. I plan to breed a good jumbo legbar male from my originals (they are HUGE chicks) to a couple rose combed pullets this coming spring. I hope to have the rose combed birds exact in every way as my original line other than the comb.
If all goes as planned, I will have lots of eggs for sale this coming spring. I have decided to breed only light brown legbars in SC & RC. I hatched a couple cream birds and still am not a fan so they got sold.

Keep at it. Please post when you have eggs next spring.
Thanks

Been reading and I love the idea of these! Also being in zone 4 the rose combs do tend to work better for me.

I would love to acquire some of these and breed them side by side with my original legbars. Of course I'd have to track chicks to avoid crossing them but I would love love love to have some of them.

Especially that lay that robin's egg blue color.

Do you sell hatching eggs?

Update December 2019

The Funny Farm has acquired the last 4 Rose Comb Legbars from Michael's breeding project and we are working on continuing development of this variety.
