Sooo I have OCD. actual, clinical, ocd. Reading on chickens and marek’s disease, I understand that my ducks aren’t at risk, but still. We’re getting chicks from Murray McMurray later this year, but we’re looking at sapphire gems from rural king.

is this a terrible idea? Is getting them in person from RK risking diseases to totally rampage our future flock?

i know I’m spiraling, but I’d rather wait months to get vaxxed chicks than make a silly mistake by taking the easy in person option :oops: so.. yeah. Tyia.

If your fear is Marek's, then I'd opt to get vaccinated chicks only. If you have smaller mom & pop feed stores in your area, you might want to check with those to see what types of chicks they get - I've gotten my chicks from 2 different stores and they both get chicks vaccinated for Marek's.

As a general rule, very young chicks from a reputable commercial hatchery are very unlikely to be vectors for illness.

All I’m saying is my SG from RK is the best chicken I have. But I would wait f you’re worried.

That is my worry. My brothers chicks are all vaccinated for it, but the rural king ones wouldn’t be.

My thought on this specifically is that if you want your broody hens to ever hatch eggs you can trust those babies won’t get it from the ground if you’ve never had unvaxxed chickens from other sources.
Yeah, it’s that I can’t to that breed that isn’t a minimum 10-15 chock requirement :he:he that’s the issue I’m having. Since we don’t have an incubator, nor need that many, it’s hard

Craigs list - local egg sellers/farmers - just ask. That’s how I get mine. “Hi, I see you’re selling (eggs/chickens) do you happen to have fertilized eggs you could sell me?”
