I’m glad Sky is doing better! I now add a vitamin booster - poultry cell is my choice - to the water of all my chicks from the second they start to drink. Just a few drops to the chick waterer. I keep that up for several weeks. I no longer lose hatched chicks.

With an assortment of mama's, we used a Silky hen to brood our eggs.. they are wonderful mothers and will set anybodies eggs! Problems solved♡.

I've had the occasional abandoner. I wonder if yours sensed most of the chicks were not strong, so she left them. I've seen other animals do that. My saddest thing was when only one egg hatched. It was vibrant on day one. On day two, I found it squashed flat as a flitter underneath mama in the nest. She was oblivious.

What breed is Salt? I had some Orpingtons once that would hatch babies and completely ignore them, letting them run around screaming until they die (or rather until I find them laying somewhere and I'm forced to take care of them)

If you want a devoted mother you'll never find something more noble in character than a game hen. I've had one fight a fox before to protect her babies

I will never again let anything other than a game hen hatch babies
