Is this chicken a girl or boy? I thought roo because of the early development of red comb and wattles and how big they are and it’s counterpart has almost nothing for comb and wattles. It’s around 4 months old no crowing yet. And when I did research it definitely doesn’t look like a sapphire gem Roo. Next question, is it even a sapphire gem?

Looks like a pullet ready to lay. I don't see any male saddle feathers.
Not sure on the breed, but a quick google search of images shows it's within the range for a sapphire gem.

Agreed.... I don't see male saddle feathers... But 16 weeks is a little early for that big of a comb and wattle.
Check the pelvic bones... if they're really close together, but that face is that red... its a boy. If they're starting to widen, like you could fit 3 of your fingers between the points, then its a girl who's body is getting ready to start pooping eggs.

My first batch of sapphire gems starting laying around 14 weeks but that comb looks really mature even for a pullet just starting to lay. I wouldn’t expect a comb that red until it’s been laying awhile. If it is a sapphire Gem, my guess is it is a cockerel. I think it’s still getting its adult feathers. There looks to be light spots on the head that is the beginning of the barring for sapphire gem males. If that’s the case you may start to see barred feathers that will overlay the solid feathers.

There is only about one finger width between the pelvic bones. This is supposed to be the other sapphire gem.

Thank you. Guess he’s just a little later than the other roosters I’ve owned on the crowing department or they were early. Lol
