Hi! I am new to raising chicks. I bought to Sapphire Sky chicks. I can't find much information about how to tell if they are roosters or hens. They are much larger than my jersey giants and orpington but maybe that's age. They also have white/yellow dots on their heads and yellow legs with brown marks. I know those traits indicate rooster for sapphire gems but I don't know if the same applies for Sapphire Sky's. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Here's a thread that's pertinent: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/sapphire-sky-early-guess-roo-or-girl.1631739/

Someone else had the same question and eventually called the hatchery. Apparently both genders of Sapphire Sky chicks will have the head spots and will be barred. Yet they are said to be sex linked, which doesn't jive.

I have a feeling there is more than one mix being used to create chicks under this name brand, but who knows? Bottom line is I think they could be pullets despite the head spots.

Thank you so much! I am going to wait and see. I think you may be right. There isn't as much information about the Sapphire Sky that I can find. Much more out there about the Gem.
