So I have some satin silkie first generation chicks hatching and I've had two hatch that I think are an I treating color but I'm not really sure what it is. Does anyone recognize this down color and know what color these chicks should be at maturity? Is this just juvenile feathering and they will molt into a separate color? Does the down tell me anything about the genetics playing out here? Mom was white- I'm assuming Recessive and dad is blue Wheaton? He is blue on the bottom and red in the hackles and saddle if I remember right. Bantam Cochin. But I have no history/very little for the parents backgrounds. I believe father could of possibly been split to silkie feathering but not sure. I know nothing about the history on the mom though.

Thanks in advance for any input! I really appreciate it 😊

With pure silkies, I'd know, yes, but I don't know what happens when crossed or other breeds. So if these were my silkies, the greyish ones are always silver splash or blues. The other ones I'd have guessed would be mauves or light buffs.
Another topic but curious if you know anything about it- I just brought in several very nice quality silkies. My intention is to do a porcelain mille Fleur satin project with silkies. I have several cockerels that the breeder said were "Isabella" and that they were on a buff to lavender base. Can I use these the same way I would a lavender to make the porcelain MF? (Not even sure that is the right term for the variety? Does porcelain include white mottling ?)

Also- if you work at all with splits like chocolate and lavender splits have you noticed any way to tell by visually looking if a black bird is split to something or true black vs dark blue?

I only way I think we know what they are split to if we bred them ourselves, the breeder tells us that, or we breed them and find out what they might make. For instance, I breed ones split to a color/trait, but lately I forgot which one of the black cockerels were split to chocolate, so I have to keep them both.

Mine were Chocolate x Black = Chocolate pullets and Black split to Chocolate cockerels, but then silly me put the blue rooster in there for a couple of weeks, so him with the black hen make 50% blue and 50% black. Thus, the dilemma I got myself in lol.

I feel your pain! Lol
