My 5 month old Andalusian hen has a scabby scaley area behind her head/neck. At first it was a small area and I thought the rooster might have pulled out some feathers, although I have not seen him do that to her or any of the others. For the first few weeks I just kept an eye on things. After leaving town for a week I came home and noticed the patch is getting bigger. I have attached a picture. I can't see any bugs or crawlies on her. There's no pussing or oozing. I have nine other hens and one rooster, none of which exhibit the same condition. My flock is in a hen house at night with a mix of pine chip and straw for litter, and out in a covered run during the day with an hour or two of free ranging most days.

Any ideas what this is and how I should treat it?

Thanks, t

Even if you don't see your rooster mounting her that doesn't mean he isn't. If she is your only hen like this her scabby bald neck usually means that she is his favorite. How many hens do you have? How old is your rooster? Spray it with some vetericyn to help it heal. You're most likely going to have to either separate your rooster or if you don't have enough hens get more.
