I live in Platte County, Wyoming, which is more or less the southeast part of the state. (About 70 miles north of the state capital in Cheyenne.)

I have zero chickens, but am somewhat curious. I can’t guarantee I will get chickens, but want to learn more before that decision is made. The hesitancy is both for my sake (time & money) and the chickens (don’t want to make errors that risk them harm).

I understand your concerns about getting chickens.

It is possible to have chickens without spending a fortune (or, so I have been told :) ).
For example, I have bought coops -- including my avatar -- used, off Craigslist. Others have done some modifications to an existing structure.

Although my flock gets a decent-quality commercial feed, I also let them forage during the day -- lots of fresh greens and juicy bugs added to their diet and reduced from my feed costs.

As far as errors that could harm them, here's the bad news: I don't know of anybody who hasn't made at least one of those, although often not fatal ones. It's like anything new, there's a learning curve.

The good news is that there are a lot of smart, generous and friendly folks here who will try to help you do the best possible job of raising your flock. If you ask a question, someone here likely has a useful answer.

Welcome to BYC! Hope your time here helps you decide to let some chickens share your life.
