Setting eggs 3/15/14 - Who is with me?

Candled last night for Day 14 (for my swedish flower hens eggs). All 33 were moving and looking great! My 4 goose eggs are also coming along. They are scheduled to hatch over a few different days next week, with the first due this Sunday.

Next week should be fun !!
That's amazing!

Can't wait for next week also, I hit day 21 next Friday.

That is awesome! I did a quick day 11 candle on some of my questionable eggs and tossed 3 more clears ( confirmed on eggtopsy). Hoping to complete confirmation on day 14 of the other questionable ones.

So I have 11 (of 24) shipped eggs left and 22 of 24 local(ish) eggs left. Still several questionable eggs. The shipped eggs have a few saddle shaped cells and to complicate things - most of them are hard to see into.

At this stage - I am less than 50% on the shipped eggs. Will feel pretty lucky if I can get 5-6 of those to hatch.

On a happy note - we are only a few days away from seeing some more adorable fluffiness on this thread!! :)

Myself and my broody hen just want the flufferbutts to hatch already! I have a broody hen that's been sitting on golf balls for awhile now, as soon as the eggs in the incubator hatch...errr I mean the golf balls

, I'm going to give them to her. If all 11 hatch she will have her wings full for sure.

After candling yesterday of the 30 shipped eggs set 8 are clear or quit early and 3 more where still when I was checking. I left them in since nothing is smelling funky. 9 of 12 d'Anvers, 5 of 6 phoenix, but looking at only 7 of the 12 rocks, and they are loosing moisture much faster than the other eggs also.

The rocks got lost for a day in LA if USPS tracking is to be believed. The other eggs went from GA to FL and then out here.
I wonder more about breeder flock nutrition.

Back when we would order chicks we did see breed specific losses. Dark Brahma bantams, SLWB, and d'Anvers chicks do not ship well. We order 3 times, 6 of each in each order. We ended up with 5 brahmas, 4 boys, 4 SLWBs, 2 boys and 3 d'Anvers 2 girls and a nasty boy.

personally... I calculate my hatch rates by what makes it to lockdown, I don't count any clears or early quitters.
Maybe that is wrong... but if 11 go to LD and 10 hatch, I give it a 90% hatch rate!

My day 14 is today... I am going to candle tonight after dark to see how many are still going strong!

Silly question, but it just slipped my mind at the moment. What should I be looking for on day 14 (Friday for me)? Swimming and the veins getting larger? It's so dark in pretty much all my remaining eggs that I can just barely see the tips of blood veins by the air sac. I may just have a bad candler too but I fashioned a little hole in cardboard for my spot light, which is extremely powerful, and still don't see much.

Its funny because with my eggs from my own chickens, the whole thing lights up with a nice red glow and some of those are dark brown eggs. The only one I cant always see through is the olive colored egg I get.

I suppose I need to take into account the chick blocking most of the light, since he's you know, getting bigger and all
