Hi everyone!
Yesterday my first lot of barred rock chicks hatched!
Is anyone here familiar with sexing them at a day old? After reading google and looking at head spot and leg colouring, I think I have 3 pullets and 2 cockerels.
Would anyone else agree by looking at their head colouring?
Thanks!

They’re super hard to get pictures of! I need practise lol. Excuse my bad photography.
I think the first 2 are cockerels, the 3rd I’m on the fence (but leaning to pullet) and the last 2 pullets?

I crossed a Barred Rock Rooster with Blue Plymouth Rock Hens. I've been reading about white spots and that they may indicate cockerel. Here's a picture of 2 of the Babies who hatched yesterday.

The thing is, when you cross breed with the barred gene, it isn't reliable as a sex link, because the barred gene(s) are on the sex chromosome Z, a fullbreed barred Plymouth rock, will have one if Pullet (ZW) and two if Cockerel (ZZ) but when you crossbreed, the roosters only have the potential for one barred Z chromosome, and thus would have the dark barred color like on the Plymouth rock hens. and some of the pullets may not have it at all, but if they are, they would be dark barred because they biologically cannot have two.

In summary, you would get only dark barred type chicks or not barred at all, the male and female crosses that are barred would be the same, essentially. But the blue gene can give you aboult half blue barred, but it would also effect males and females the same. Not sexlik-able for the first batch with this combo

I’m pretty sure my Barred Rocks are all roos. First one is the sweetest and has the most fuzz still on them. Second one… well, I’m pretty sure Brooke Shields is a dude.
