Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I thought you mentioned once that roosters/cockerels arent interested in hens that are not ready to lay. So… do you think Sylph will lay her first egg soon?
I will have mentioned that mature roosters in general don't bother hens that are not laying. I find it hard to believe I've written this about cockerels because it's so obviously not true. Cockerels will try and mate with anything, brothers sisters, mums, my boots, stones, toys...
If you are aware of a post where I have written what you thought I had, then please link me to it and I will edit it.

Yep, I had some cockerels going for the pullets, hens, each other, and finally decided they would spar out their hormones this morning. What a mess that was. One refused to settle down so I had to butcher him as I need some semblance of order in there. And by refuse to settle I mean attacking others without any posturing or warnings.

Shame, he was the most developed and handsome of the legbar boys. Had something weird going on with his throat though, made an awful clicking sound instead of normal chicken noises.
Despite all that, I appear to have a new layer. Very small greenish egg.

For the moment its not possible to register by using the form 'register to be a keeper of less than 50 poultry or other captive birds' or emailing [email protected].

Technical issues? Or too many people try to register. ;)

Unsurprisingly many people left it to the last minute and unsurprisingly the powers that be didn’t anticipate this which means the system was overwhelmed. So a bit of both. Impossible not to do so if you have chickens on council land, a registered agricultural holding / smallholding or have neighbours who will dob you in. So that’s a good proportion of us in England & Wales. Scotland pipped us to the post with registering and DAERA in NI have required bird registration for a number of years. Designed to protect the poultry industry, need I say more?
