Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Two and a half hours today. A dry and chilly afternoon.
Got the last holes dug out on this section of the fence. Only gate and two posts holes to dig on the other side of the field gate now. More rubbish cleared away. Too busy to take pictures.:p
Chickens were out on the extended run while I worked. I'm waiting for materials to be delivered for the fence, probably on the 22nd of this month. I'll have a few days to do some work in the run; getting the rest of the rubbish out, digging what will be my small growing plot, clearing the rubble and weeds out of the wire cage and transplanting some fruit bushes.

Whew, that sounds like a lot of work.

I will take a nap tomorrow in your honor!

Great progress. I had not realized the difference in level.
Have you considered raised beds for your little plot?
It is a lot easier on the back.

How are you now vis-à-vis the shingles virus @Shadrach ?

Prompted by your horrible experience with it, I've got myself vaccinated against it. Apparently it's like many other vaccines, in that it mollifies the effects rather than prevents it occurring. Since I had chickenpox as a child, I assume I am carrying it anyway, so this is all about reducing the impact in the event of any revival from dormancy.

Speaking of fences, I finally found someone to replace a 70' section that was destroyed by falling trees. The man I hired is probably in his mid-forties, and I think he did a pretty good job. The only thing new is the gate, the rest was purchased several years ago from a neighbor when they switched to a wooden fence.

My backyard will be completely fenced once the driveway gates are installed, hopefully Monday.
:celebrate

Tax is in the second photo, the Dominiques and Esther checking out their new digs.

I have. If this was my own land I might but the plot size is small and I'll enjoy scrabbling around on my hands and knees pretending to forage with the chickens.:p
It's all about making as good an environment for the chickens now. I've done a veg plot for three years now. It's okay I suppose but I'm not a gardener and to make veg growing worthwhile one needs to be able to preserve the produce. I can't really do that and most of what I've grown in the past gets got given away.
