Winter just hit and it seems like my girl Blue isn’t taking it well. She’s about 8-9 months old, light Brahma, we are in Southeast Michigan. She’s at the top of the pecking order and has always been a big, hefty, healthy chicken. Once winter hit I noticed her comb go from vibrant red to a darker red/purple. She also began moving around more slowly. She is still moving and pecking around but sometimes she’ll just stand there and close her eyes. She’s drinking a ton of water, but seems less interested in food although she still eats. She has been having diarrhea for maybe up to a week now, I did notice there are some small solids in it and small amounts of blood. She doesn’t appear to be in respiratory distress. When I examined her for a bound egg, I felt her keel bone extremely prominently. It feels like there is an egg like mass near the bottom and side of her vent, but I’m unsure if it’s an egg or if her abdomen is feeling rigid. She is noticeably less heavy than previously. Her crop is squishy whenever I feel it. I see no signs of mites or lice.
What can I do?? I think it could be coccidiosis or necrotic enteritis but I’m unsure of which treatment to try first since I don’t want to make her worse. Please help!
Thank you!
