It's always difficult when they die and many times we never know why. This is the mystery of chickens. Know you tried and don't feel like you failed her. You were observant and aware, you tried and this is what matters. Hugs.

Her crop only had a little bit of grass in it. Not sure what caused her death. I thought surely it was impacted.
 
It is hard to know. Usually sour crop causes the crop to be full of fowl smelling brown liquid. Did your friend do a necropsy? A bad odor could be sour crop, coccidiosis, unknown infection , canker, or infectious coryza. But she didn’t seem to have any of those symptoms. A necropsy really is the best way to find out what was going on. The best one is the one that the state vet vet lab does. They look at tissue and do cultures for infection.
