Would this work? I’m in upstate NY so the temps regularly drop below 0 December thru February. If it wouldn’t, it there a better solar heater? I have no electricity, except solar, at my coop and run.

Huh.... looks like it might help. But where it gets really cold you might want to insulate the masonry.

No way does any rock or masonry block get warm in the sun at my place in winter time.

But then, I am at latitude 59, maybe you get enough sun to actually give warmth.

When my electric isn't reliable I just bring out water twice or 3 times a day.

I do find that my black water tubs, if put on the sheltered side of a mostly clear plastic panel, manage to stay thawed longer than if put in the open.

So.... I guess that means I do get some solar warmth. ;)

With large livestock we would bring out warm water for them, and hold it in an insulated container, with a small opening to drink out of.

It does get warm here some days in winter. But only if you stand directly in the sun. The water freezes over night and then some days it doesn’t get warm enough to thaw it out.

Bringing water back and forth is what I might have to do. I have a solar panel and the stuff to hook up solar power but with the village on me about my chickens I haven’t set it up. I don’t want to until I know my chickens can stay.
I run an extention cord from my garage to coop, but they do make solar generators.
Before I had to move my chickens that’s what I did. But now my coop and run are 300ft from my house. I could run cords but it doesn’t seem like the most practical way to do it.

I've used those black rubber dog bowls in the run and the sun does help to thaw them some/keep them from freezing but I'm in kentucky. They still freeze over at night and sometimes froze solid.

I started experimenting with cinder blocks heated on my wood stove in the garage then place a metal waterer on it. Didn't try real hard because I've got power at the coop.
