Sour Crop Treatment with Topical Miconazole Nitrate?

Hello BYC

My two year old Ameraucana, Betty, has a very bad case of sour crop.

I have a tube of generic Miconazole Nitrate made to treat athletes foot. It says External Use Only and call poison control if ingested.

I have found contradictory guidance on BYC as to whether use of topical Miconazole Nitrate is safe to treat sour crop in chickens. Does anyone know for sure one way or the other? If it’s not safe I’ll go pick up some Monistat 7 tomorrow, but I can tell she’s suffering and if possible I’d like to start the treatment right away tonight.

Miconazole 2% cream is safe to use for sour crop in chickens. It is used off label as in this article:

Even the cream made specifically for external use?

I read that article in its entirety and all the comments before I posted (it’s great, and bookmarked now,) but I also saw elsewhere that someone’s vet told them not to use the topical cream internally. I imagine the inactive ingredients could be dangerous?

Here’s a photo of what I’ve got. This is okay to use?

Thanks for the reply. Before I posted I checked a pdf of the package insert for Monistat7 online in order to compare the inactive ingredients with the product I have. I already know the active ingredients are the same, it’s the inactive I am unsure of because that’s where they differ. I know y’all aren’t vets, but you’re still very helpful and knowledgeable and I appreciate it! For what it’s worth, I also try to do my own research.

Anyway, it’s getting late so I’ll just hold off and get the Monistat tomorrow morning, as I know for sure that it is fit for this purpose and safe. Thanks everyone, have a great night!

i’ve tried it haven’t show results and they vomit a lot with this
