So I hatched some eggs from my Blue Marans hen.

I have 2 roos-- Blue Marans (not dominant, but gets some action) and Barred rock (2 copies of barring gene).

I'm getting hatched chicks, and I've had 2 hatch out a light silvery gray. Are these splash or just a light blue? I've always wanted splash chickens!!!

I can't find any pictures to tell me if splash actually hatches out silver or yellow, and these are definitely silver.

I couldn't get lavender out of that mix, could I?

HELP!

Splash vary from yellow to pale silvery grey, while blues are darker in color - there is one clearly blue chick here, and I think the two darker greys were blue, the rest are all splash

Is your Maran rooster a cuckoo or solid blue?

All blue maran roo x barred rock crosses will be black or blue

Blue roo x Blue hen crosses will be black (25%), blue (50%) or splash (25%)
- of those only Splash will look yellow/silver in color, so seems likely you have 3 splash, although some blue chicks will be very light grey and the color is hard to tell in that picture.

Lavender is a different gene.

BTW if you turn off your red heat lamp when taking pictures they will turn out much better

All Barred cock offspring will be barred. Even on blue birds you can see silver spot. They will also be 50% blue and 50% black if over a blue hen.

Marans roo is blue copper, not cuckoo. The other roo is barred rock.

And yeah, the red lamp is killing the pics. I wasn't planning to post them! Thanks tho ;)

I can definitely tell the offspring from the barred roo, I've been breeding him a while and he clearly has 2 barring genes so he's not a mix. So I figure everything that has a white spot is from my barred roo or my barred hens.

I'm actually hoping the blue roo got some action with the barred hens, or the barred roo with the blue hen. I'd love to have some blue barred chicks!
