Spotted egg chicken breed

Here's what I got from my RIR girls today. They also just happen to be some of my absolute best layers, which makes me a very happy woman

cackleberry, those eggs are really pretty! I have a rosecomb RIR that's an excellent layer, but her eggs are solid colored. She's from a show line that was just an extra (a friend of mine breeds them) - she's a gorgeous girl, but her eggs aren't near as pretty as YOUR girls' eggs are!

I went out to watch them awhile last night, the olive eggers I talked about...well, I realized just last night that one of them has a single comb, which means it's very likely she did NOT receive the blue egg gene; thus, HER eggs will likely be a medium brown rather than olive green. Darnit anyway!

Yeah, I've had RIRs for years and never saw a spotted egg before. These eggs come from hens who were given to me just before they started laying. The woman decided that she didn't like having to take care of chickens after raising them from chicks to about three months and advertised free RIRS. When they first began to lay these fabulous spotted gems, I couldn't believe it, and seriously, they rival my production reds for output. They are by all appearances just true blue RIRs. I'm breeding them separately for spotted egg layers. Which brings me to a question..... How does the spotted egg thing work? With your olive eggers there, the single combed chicken has just as much chance of still being a spotted egg layer? Or no? Is it a simple case of a gene that passes on the spotted egg trait and is it dominant or recessive to solid egg color?

Birch Run - post pics! Can't WAIT to see your speckled beauties!

cackleberry - the single combed olive egger girl does indeed have a chance of being a speckled layer, just not a GREEN speckled egg layer.

I'm unsure of the genetics of speckled eggs, but I am relatively sure that it's genetic. When it comes down to it, most everything is genetics, but as far as dominant/recessive, I'm unsure!

Dumb newbie question here...

Do the spots scrub off?

I just got a really speckled egg today, and when I did a quick rubbing wash, the spots stayed on. But, if I used a soft brush (with a little friction, didn't want to scrub too hard), some of the spots come off.

It was from my Araucana/RIR. She's laid a couple before with just a couple of spots.
