Stolen Eggs

Fed my 24 hens this morning and someone had gone into our barn where we keep the eggs in a frig and they were all gone!!! I can't believe someone would steal eggs!! Needless to say we put a lock this afternoon on the door to the barn!! This is so rediculous!!! I'm very upset to say the least. Thankfully only had 2 dozen eggs. Everyone needs to be careful

That really doesn't shock me! With everyone losing jobs and such its a common problem!

Doesn't surprie me either, sad thing is 9 times out of 10 the person responsible is probably someone close to you i.e. relative or friend. I haven't had any problems because I lock up/bolt down everything, however, I have a friend who has eggs stolen out of the fridge he sells out of on his carport (honor system) I told him I'd be happy to loan him a camera if he wants.

Hmmm..this would tempt me to leave a note on the door saying you now have a photo of the egg bandit. Let them worry about what you will do with it.

How sad is this??? I would rather GIVE my eggs away to someone who is in need. But what is really sad is the person who took your eggs probably didnt even "need" them! UGH...and my family and friends wonder why I like animals more than humans.

Glad to hear you put a lock on your barn door. I would also add a motion light at the entrance just to distract them.

You might want to put a lock on your coop, too. Chances are, live chickens would be too much trouble to steal, but that took a lot of nerve to still eggs out of your fridge!

This is so sad, and has happened here. A poultryman about 5 miles from here keeps a refrigerator and an honesty cup on a table beside it in the porch to his large (locked) coop. He keeps several closed flocks with lavish runs.

People stop by, leave money and spare cartons, and take their eggs. Though his wife is home she has serious arthritis and prefers not to have to answer the door too much. Jimmy put up a sign that tells someone that if they need a dozen eggs and can't pay to please take them and to bring empty cartons back. He's off the property much of the time and he's the kind of guy that would never see someone go hungry. Of course you don't know if you're dealing with an opportunist thief or someone in need. It makes his wife nervous too, in a place where doors were left unlocked at one time- not now.

Our food banks are struggling this year, too.

I was really naive!!! I didn't realize how often this happens, based on everyone's comments. I have locked the run and the door to the coop. They cannot get in any more. I hope this posting will help others, so that they will lock up as well. I just never would have imagined that someone would steal eggs. They had to climb a locked gate as well. Maybe it was kids?? But.. there was beer in the frig and that was not taken, so don't know if it really was kids. Oh well, I'll never know, but just frustrating and saddened that we have to lock everything up.

There were many days when I went out to collect the eggs and all of the nest boxes were empty. I thought to myself how could this be? Why would they just all of a sudden stop laying? They weren't moulting and no change in the weather. Well a 42 yr old single daughter who is back with us temporarily until she can find a job and a place to stay was taking all of the eggs. She has been going through over a dozen eggs a day. That's all she has been eating. I gave her some money to get some groceries and now she is on food stamps but was still taking the eggs until I told her to stop taking them. I wouldn't mind if she took some but she was taking them all and sharing them with her NA/AA friends. She started coming into my collection area and was taking my eggs I sell. I had to put my foot down and tell her to stop taking the eggs. A friend of mine said some of his so called friends have been going over to his house and cleaning out his nest boxes too. They're not leaving even one egg. I know times are hard. I have a job and work on the farm. I sell eggs. I had to tell my buyers I didn't have any.
