I really like my poop shelves, they keep the entire coop cleaner. I have nest boxes suspended from some poop shelves, and under one I set it up so I could use the under-poop shelf area as a brooder. A removable wire wall for the under poop shelf area is an excellent use of space.
I couldn't bare the thought of not having the maximum amount of chicken space... so I do store some things in the coop (small trowel for the poop shelves is on a hook on the wall, my seasonal water heater is also on a hook on the wall), oyster shell is in a garbage can in the middle of the floor.
My grandmother had an entire storage closet to the side of her coop to store all chicken stuff. But I find the stuff I don't have on the inside or outside coop walls, or that one trashcan, fit just fine on my garden bench and a tote in my mudporch.
My feed is stored in the mudporch, but I use a trashcan feeder with PVC ports, that holds over 50 pounds of feed, so I don't need to keep much in the house.
I loved all of @Ridgerunner 's comments.
So true about space.... if they have a huge covered run, or not.... huge difference as to how much coop space you need.
