My brother just got some day old chicks and ducklings and he refuses to use a brood lamp.
He thinks he knows everything about chickens but he is constantly having them die before they mature. I afford to let him use my brood lamp and his reply was "NAH it is warm enough for them".
During the day it is warm enough with the temps getting in the high 90's but at night it drops down to the high 70's low 80's. 11 weeks ago he bought 40 chicks and with in the first week 14 died because he will not use the brood lamp and he put them in with older birds.
Then when the surviving chicks were 5 weeks old he started feeding them Grower Feed instead of Chick Starter. He thinks he know everything about chickens but he really doesn't know hardly anything.
How do I get it through his thick head that he needs to use the brood lamp at night?

The picture is of my 6 week old chicks when I first got them

It is really unfortunate that some people aren't willing to learn. Is he older than you? That makes it even less likely that he will listen to you.
The encouraging thing is that he will probably get tired of spending money and time on chicks that die for him, and he will move on to something else. Hopefully nothing that is live.

Yes he is older. Back when his boys were in 4H my sister-in-law went to some classes about raising chickens but he wouldn't go and the boys did raise and show some birds. Now he thinks he knows all there is about raising chickens but he won't listen to anyone. I admit that I don't but that is why I am in groups like this to learn.
Got up at 2 to go to the bathroom. Well here comes a duckling running down the hall to me. I close the door but I do home dialysis and the door wouldn't close completely because of the tubes, This little fellow follows me into the bathroom.
So for his/her protection I picked it up and put it in the dirty clothes hamper and gave it some water. 101_0151.JPG 101_0152.JPG 101_0153.JPG 101_0154.JPG

He put the chicks and ducklings out in our storage room in a kiddie pool. He doesn't know it but I put the brood lamp over them for the night, They have plenty of room to move away from it if they get too hot.
He lost 3 chicks this morning after they got wet from the waterer. He used to brood lamp warm them up but 3 were more or less trampled to death by the others. Then he turned around and bought 10 more chicks from TSC today.
He just couldn't stand it that I had more birds than him.
