Thanks, all. It's fun to play "name this type of chicken." So far, she's a good bird that has Sumatra characteristics and Australorp characteristics. I hope she gives me some nice eggs soon. Even if she doesn't she will probably hang out and be a pet. My favorite bird is a 8 month old black star that has yet to give me an egg. /sigh

That does sound like a great mix, and I'm sure you'll get lots of eggs. That's very odd for a black star not to be laying yet.

Yes, it is. I specifically sought out black stars for their laying capabilities. One we had to put down because it had what seemed to be constant kidney problems (leaking urea for over a month) and this one who is as pretty as can be but keeps her legs crossed. Luckily for her, she has character. Or is a character, either one.

I wouldn't give up hope, it seems like sometimes they take a while to get started, but in my unscientific study, when they eventually start laying, they can't stop.

yes, without a doubt

and she is quite beautiful. I have two 3 month old Sumatra/Black Austrolop mix hens I purposely bred as an experiment. One looks like yours. One looks like a HUGE blue Sumatra. It's an experiment for larger, brownish/tan eggs. Plus the only chicken I own that is NEARLY as smart as a Sumatra, is my Black Austrolop. If it all works out well, I'll breed some more, in a seperate pen, just for the egg sales business.

Beautiful hen! Nice mix. Refined the Austrolop with the neatness of the Sumatra.

. I had to have dh cull this morning. I had it with only 2 other chicks, a black sumatra and a oegb. It had a rough naval and last night they decided that was interesting and pecked it, it's intestines were on the outside today and a bit dry, I couldn't get them back in

. I had dh cull so it didn't suffer. I know better and was going to move them today, I tried to separate in the brooder and it kept getting back with the others. I am just sick over this, I have waited 3 years for this and it's my fault it's gone
