Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

I had a duck jump in an old kitty litter pail that I was using because it was the only one I could get through the door (that's another story! Plans had changed and I was using what was supposed to be a back chicken door to get in and out - doors updgraded this year lol) She was stuck tight, perfect fit if I had been trying to restrain her. It was a good thing I found her early on. So now I'm careful to be sure any buckets either can't be gotten into or can be gotten out of! Hilarious picture.

So true! I just started with ducks last year. I have a pekin rescue who is a pet and a muskovy mix (I think) rescue as well who is queen of us all lol. I got 3 others for her for company last year, and what was I thinking, let her sit on her eggs last spring so I have 9 in one pen and the pekin in with a lone banty named Fancy because she's real pretty :) in another and four chickens I raised from chicks a few years ago in another. I don't feel like I've done much else the past year but it's slowly getting better. I love ducks and the eggs are magnificent, I prefer them over chicken eggs, I don't tell the chickens that, but it's been a challenge. Now onto winter. We have very cold winters down to -40. Just figuring the set up for them now for water.

I get yo -48C at times as well
Don’t put water in the coop
I did last year as mine wouldn’t come outside that cold
But it caused frost up the walls and floor
I had to rush 16 ducks into my house and they stayed in till we got a warm spell where I could adjust then back to cooler weather
After that we threw up a coveted area where snow couldn’t get in for feed and water
This spring we built it much better
I used clear panels as it helps warm it up with the sun
I added window , fan in the utter window and a screen door
Slowing lots of venting for water and cold air
I use heated water buckets 3 of them
I clean them out at night and leave unplugged
This way I don’t chance fires at night
In the day the ducks can go out through the duck door I added to the screen to free range if they want
Or hang out in the enclosed outdoor area or coop
Just fluff the hay in outdoor area
I also added a solar light in there
It keeps it bright enough when it gets dark the ducks feel safe going in at night
I can also do my waters and feed dishes then

Well after the last few weeks of my goose begging my ducks to mate her
( I must say if funny they watch them try )
I found her a mate
He immediately ran to her and follows her everywhere
She is playing shy including running on my lap when he comes to close
She is getting better today
This boy has never had a name
Would love to hear suggestions
He is the darker one
My goose is Stella :)

Maybe Astro as in “Astrophel and Stella,” “astrophil means star lover” which was a collection of sonnets from the 1500s.

Here’s some of my other favorite names “Broccoli, Stefano, Bramble, Neptune, Copernicus, Apollo, Kumquat, Fern, Barley, Orion.”
