I have some Easter Eggers that are about 3.5 weeks old. Today I noticed this one laying on an obviously swollen leg. It seems to go all the way from hock to toes. She does not bear weight on it and is hopping on just her right leg. There is no sign of injury or trauma. Any advice or recommendations??

Can you look up into the feathers for any hair or string that has been wrapped around the leg? Can you see any green or blue bruising? I would separate her within view of her other chicks with food and water. Is she in a brooder?

A chick sling might be helpful to get her upright and in front of food and water. Here are some examples and there is a design on page 2:

She should be allowed out of the sling for periods to sleep or stretch. Some chickens do not tolerate slings, and may fight to get out of them. Food and water can be placed right in front of them. Post 60 in the sling thread is very good to look at.

With the swelling, it may be an injury from being stepped on or possibly broken or sprained. Chicks can heal pretty quick but need plenty of food and water, and need to see other chicks.
