i am with steve i would say the best thing is to put it down.peas are far to heavy a bird to have one leg when they are full grown.i know it's a hard thing to do but it is somthing you have to deal with when you raise birds just part of farming.goodluck jim

It is up to you what you decide to do with your bird, but what ever it is it needs to be done right.

If you are opting for amputation then don't you need to involve a vet?

I consulted a vet about it and he said it wouldn't be much of a problem for the bird if I done it while she was young sp that way she would build enough muscle in her one good leg to move around. I purchased kitty soma's from him to neturalize any pain if she had any. I did a series of test by poking her leg with a pin and she not once moved, I iced her leg down for a good hour, sanitized everything and amputated her leg. I put her on anti-biotics for two weeks and she's on top of the world. I beg to disagree with putting them down, you don't see people putting down their children for having bad legs now do you. For future problems if any occur, I've been constructing her a prostetic leg but I'm a long way from being done. If anyone has a pea thats fairly young with a bad leg, i would gladly pay shipping for you to send it before "U PUT IT DOWN". You shouldn't own these birds if you can't take care of them. @ndy:)

If you are going to be selling you peafowl at some point in life, and I was a new buyer to Peafowl and came out to your house and I am looking at all these one legged birds hoping around I wouldn't stick around I'd get back in my car and leave.

You know some Cameos carries the blind gene, there head will turn white then they will go blind also some of the Peach carries the same kind of gene. So do you keep breeding them and passing this gene along or put them down and start over so no one else gets it and passes it along?

If you keep every bird that has bad legs and more people send them to you, you will have to quite your job to take care of the hundreds of bad legged birds that you don't even hear about.

So, if this is what you want to do more power to you, get a hold of some of the bigger breeders I bet they may be able to keep you supplied with crippled birds, but most all put theirs down just encase it is a bad gene. You have had Peafowl for about a year now, wait til you have been in it for 10 years with 500 to 600 birds on the ground and see if you feel the same, "Do I take care of one or two crippled birds or take care of the 400 plus other little ones that need my attention"???????. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.......

We take GREAT care of ALL birds on our farm, when they are sick we medicate there is no telling how much $$$$$$$$ we have spent over the years on meds, wormers etc.. to keep our birds healthy, so just because we don't want to cut there legs off don't mean we don't take CARE of them.................

Yes I can take care of them, and I put down any deformed birds. I don't care to see these birds in pain, or living a poor life. No I wouldn't even give them away, sure way to past bad genes along.

I don't know how to seperate your post into 3 seperate quotes. I have tried, I hope it works
Firstly I cannot believe any self respecting vet would sell you a pain killer for your bird knowing you were planning a do-it-yourself amputation.
Secondly and probably the most important one is they are NOT children. They are birds, birds that are personable yes but ultimately they are still birds and are still eaten by a lot of people...not children. If you want children have them but birds are not a substitute and you should not put human morals onto keeping birds.
Lastly, everyone takes care of birds the way they see is best. Some will put the bird down and end it's suffering others will amputate, there is no right or wrong and doing one or the other does not mean you are not taking care of your birds. Doing nothing would mean you weren't taking care of your birds.

(If you want children have them but birds are not a substitute and you should not put human morals onto keeping birds.) Thats the craziest thing I've heard in a long time. Thanks for the laugh

What did you expect folks to say when you more or less told them they couldn't take care of birds?? they would

you.

If you get into Peafowl to make a Quick Buck you are sadly mistaken it will NEVER happen, when you have $30,000 to $45,000 tied up in birds then add feed, meds, building supplies etc... on top of that. There is no such thing as a QUICK BUCK in raising birds you may, but not to often make some money to help on the feed bill.
