The Mighty Barnevelder

Hello everyone, just was gonna chat bout the Barnevelder Rooster. The one in the picture his names Lucky, lucky because someone was gonna eat him if we didn't take him. Anyway had not had much experience with the breed, none actually, didn't even know it was a thing, his now apart of a flock of Isa Brown and Australorp x New Hampshire chickens. His friendly, quiet, doesn't crow much and is clever, quick to catch onto things an learn, got long legs pretty big critter, shiny feathers similar to Australorps. This is also the first rooster we've had and his a good fella imo. Any of you had any experiences with the The Mighty Barnevelder roosters or the hens? interested to hear if so.

Got a bunch of Barnvelders. Had three Roos this year, culled two as we only needed one. They are such wonderful birds. If you don't need to interact with them, they have no problems staying around you just doing what they do; They are not skittish; they are confident, quiet, great layers, curious.. If you want to interact with them it all depends on the bird. Probably 80% of our Barnies walk away when you try to pick them up, but even when you do they don't try to get away. The rest are cool with being handled. Our rooster is a decent rooster. Not super aggressive about protecting his flock but is always WELL aware of what they are doing. We can usually pick him up no problem and he'll just hang out.

Barnvelder rooster sounds similar to what your saying very much so. Don't have any Barnvelder hens, but in your picture seems you do. And those baby chicks are they also Barnvelders? It'll be interesting to see what the babies turn out to look like if he breeds with the hens in our flock, one of our Isa Browns was broody about two weeks before we got him, she's not anymore. He seem to like the Australorp crosses more though so far.

A few of my Barnevelders along with a few other breeds. Out free ranging. They are a great addition to any flock. Everyone loves those big terra cotta colored eggs.

My shipment of barnevelder chicks arrived today! They are eating, drinking, using the brooder plate, and becoming more active. Looking forward to joining the ranks raising the mighty Barnevelder! I'll post some pictures tomorrow after they have had a chance to recover from their journey.

Awesome stuff. Yep IV recently got the broody heat plate thing too for when Luckys off spring hatch.
