Oh the garage is the stock tank brooders with hardware cloth tops!We have different brooders for different stages. They go in the building in the big stock tank brooders once they are a few days old, then once they are about 2 weeks old they go into the wire bottomed brooders because they start flying out around then until around 6 weeks old. After that they go to the outdoor brooders until they are sturdy enough to turn out with the gen pop. We are constantly rotating chicks through this process this time of year. Most of the chicks we let free range until the breeders we need are old enough to be bred. Layers remain free ranging except for my husbands beloved White Leghorn hens and a few Sussex just because the white birds tend to be more prone to getting taken by predators.
Yes having tops on them the stock tanks works well. I hate it when they get out and I have to run them down. lol We took a big homemade bird aviary type thing we got from my sister and segregated it off into sections. It has a hinged door to it and it works good for older chicks.Oh the garage is the stock tank brooders with hardware cloth tops!
I use different brooders or pens for different ages too. Shuffling chicks weekly. Move the oldest ones, clean that brooder then bump the next group to it, clean theirs and repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.....We have different brooders for different stages.
