The Moonshiner's Leghorns

We finally got a good day to plant the garden. After that near heat stroke we moved chickens from one pen to the next and back over and some over yonder. I also have chicks hatching as I type. Also have a bunch of my young RIRs sold. I’m gonna candle those eggs that I bought last week and see how that’s going. Moony, it would take me a week to accomplish what you just did in a day!
That's awesome you got so much done. I can't wait to plant a garden one of these days.

I got all my Easter hatch out to the Crested EE pen for grow out till I choose a few to keep and sell the rest. They spent the first night on the branches I have in there but now are staying in the extension side huddled in a corner. 🙄

We have rain coming like Tuesday or Wednesday so I'm thinking of moving them to the pen where the silkies where. I got them sold yesterday. 😊

We got a lot done today also. We played musical brooders and moved the 6 Buffs and the 4 oldest Browns from Don to a brooder that is on the ground. They had fun dust bathing and scratching in the dirt and straw. One of the Brown cockerels from the second set (different breeder) broke his leg and had to be culled. So down to 9 of those. Cleaned brooders and moved a bunch of chicks and poults out of the building to the outdoor brooders. I will be turning some of the oldest chicks loose soon, once we get past the next few days, since more rain is predicted. The crooked-toed Brown Leghorn from the youngest set from Don also had to be culled, leaving me with 5 of those. It's toes were all curled inward, and it was having difficulty walking.

I hate it when they huddle instead of trying to roost. My husband always goes out at night and checks on newly turned out birds to make sure they have at least gotten into a place that would shelter them from the rain, like the hen house or an open pen. There is nothing worse than chicks trying to pile in the yard, especially when it rains.

Yeah it's hard to get to them where they pile. So I'm moving them tonight to the other pen.

Had a big loss. I forgot to latch the pen on the big brooder yesterday when I was moving chicks and the goat must have pawed the door open to eat the chicken feed. As dumb as goats are, she knows how to open doors. The turkeys in the goat lot killed every… single… one. I am devastated. Feels like I took a round to the chest. Most of the chicks were my Red x Brown Leghorns. 😭😭😭
