Dear Chickenistas,

As we all know chickens are masters of spilling their feed. It is in their nature. But the desire to have a non-spill chicken feeder is in the heart of every chicken keeper. Being such a one myself, I have built several PVC pipe style chicken feeders. But none of them worked to the extent that I wanted. My chickens still managed to spill out their feed. I really don't like the sand floor of my run to turn to yellow with chicken feed.

So this brings me to my question. Is there anyone out there who has successfully built and used a non-spill PVC pipe type feeder? I would like to emphasize PVC pipe type because due to limited space I do not want to put a large feeder in my run. Also PVC pipe style feeders are very easy to fill from outside of the run making them attractive for me.

Please share pictures if you know a design that works.

Post some pics of the designs you have tried - then others can chime in with how the ones they have are different and how their might work better than what you have tried.

My current design looks like this. You can see how much of spillage there is:

Maybe I can make a design similar to those bucket feeders but rectangular and sits just outside the coop, where the current feeders are.

I don't see why you couldn't use something with a flat side like a cat litter container or storage tote and have the pvc neck stick in the run. The important part is getting the height correct. It will be higher than your current setup.

I know for my hens (isa browns/glw) sitting the bucket on a cinder block is just right with a 3 inch opening. Now my rooster (rhode island red) that is too low and too small opening. His feeder is sitting on a cinder block with 2 inch spacer and the opening has to be 4 inch for his comb. Actually means I can feed layer feed to the hens and all flock to him as he will not stick his head in their feeder but some of the girls will eat out of his.

I have zero waste PVC feeders and I mean ZERO waste. Well, minus the bit that I spill when filling. But I’m getting better! It took some tweaking, mind you. They still scratched out a ton of feed with the first iteration. Now it’s perfected AND I can fit and entire bag of feed in my setup (such a bonus).
