The myth of non-spill chicken feeders

Find my Broody Bath Time post. 12 four week old chicks having a bath while broody keeps the flock at bay.
What I cannot get video of is them hopping into my lap to get a crop rubbed and see if there’s tasty treats floating around.
Can't find it... Do you have a link? Or the thread name? "Broody Bath Time" returns nothing...
I miss the days of chicks hopping into my lap. Mine are pouty teenagers now, and above these things 😒😄

My current design looks like this. You can see how much of spillage there is:

Maybe I can make a design similar to those bucket feeders but rectangular and sits just outside the coop, where the current feeders are.
Your design should be fine if you extend the ends a bit more, I’ve raised mine as my birds got taller so they reach the right amount and even if they pile up the feed they don’t have enough room to actually scoop out the feed I have 1 pipe like yours and a regular hanging 5 gallon feeder bout 10 inches off the ground for 20 pullets 10weeks to 30 weeks of age . No waste. Here’s a recommended height I go a bit higher like stated previously

I have zero waste PVC feeders and I mean ZERO waste. Well, minus the bit that I spill when filling. But I’m getting better! It took some tweaking, mind you. They still scratched out a ton of feed with the first iteration. Now it’s perfected AND I can fit and entire bag of feed in my setup (such a bonus).

This is a good idea!

I believe these feeders simulate the same idea that the recommended bucket feeder has

I wonder how the inside of these feeders look like. There should be a curved piece bending downwards. Anyone by accident has a feeder like this?

By the way the lip idea is great but I found such lips to scrape off feathers from the underside of the chickens' necks due to constant friction.

Dear Chickenistas,

As we all know chickens are masters of spilling their feed. It is in their nature. But the desire to have a non-spill chicken feeder is in the heart of every chicken keeper. Being such a one myself, I have built several PVC pipe style chicken feeders. But none of them worked to the extent that I wanted. My chickens still managed to spill out their feed. I really don't like the sand floor of my run to turn to yellow with chicken feed.

So this brings me to my question. Is there anyone out there who has successfully built and used a non-spill PVC pipe type feeder? I would like to emphasize PVC pipe type because due to limited space I do not want to put a large feeder in my run. Also PVC pipe style feeders are very easy to fill from outside of the run making them attractive for me.

Please share pictures if you know a design that works.

Ok um I'm not sure if you have tried Rent-A-Coop but there is almost 0, no waste at all. I had an issue with rats & I got their bucket feeders & their great. The only waste is the crumb or 2 they pull out of the feeder themselves & put on the ground which is virtually 0. Had them for years. They are awesome. Pricey now a days. I got mine for $40 a few years ago now it's ! $70 !!!!!!! Unfortunately a bear decided to take BOTH & chew them up. Not wanting to spend that kinda money I got their kits with ports. Salvaged a few parts & feed ports, the no roost roof cones from the one the bear took & made another. Just used 2 old Tidy Cats litter buckets. They have a tool to drill your own holes too. Work almost as good as the original.

Of a chicken can get their feet or foot in there then there is going to be waste. I have 1 that does not hold a full bag of feed ..is galvanized open top. Since it's open topped I do not put more than 2 days feed in it. It rains then the feed is ruined . I have seen the inserts people use in 5 gallon buckets. It looks to be pretty spill proof as long as it is put together right. They can't get their feet in it at all. .
