The Truth About Factory Farming. *Graphic description*

i do not like factory farming at all. when i found out how bad it was, i got into chickens for eggs and meat.

now keep in mind there are a lot of people who don't have the time or money to raise there own food. as much as we are against it there are people who need it for there food.

but i like to think am in the third camp. there are people who use factory farming as there single use of meat and others who raise as much as there meat as possible. am in the camp those who would prefer to raise and also go out and hunt/catch what i can.

there is a lot of under utilized meat sources out there. when you think of it, (now before i go on please keep in mind to follow your laws when it comes to hunting, fishing and trapping) most of the time we ate lots of these animals back in the frontier days and just stopped when it came to factory farming.
i know people used to love eating raccoon (again i don't think i could) not the city garbage raiders but the ones out in the corn fields.
where i live black bears are getting very high in population and they are tasty again you need the forest blue berry ones and there great.
but there are all sorts of good free range meat out there for the taking (legally that is of course) from fish to frogs to turtles to deer, elk to beaver.

sorry i might of went off topic there, i just think more people should hunt and trap for there own meat.

I got into raising chickens after trying to decrease my reliance on factory farm and make a difference. But who was I kidding. I live in the city and processing birds was a no. So...I got into raising quail. That went really well and I had both eggs and meat. Too bad I became allergic to eggs. I took a break this year from quail. I still have ducks. No processing though. I named them lol!
People are so removed from what they eat and quite frankly Americans are too lazy and cheap to do it. I think we should be required to raise some of our own food. We complain about farmers and the cost of food when I hear weekly ranchers are being driven broke by the market. Factory farms could be closed if people either raised a portion of what they ate or bought directly from the farm. Until then I don't see much changing.

Seems on point to me. :thumbsup

I would just like to state that while we also fish and such and I think it's great option... I don't think wild animals have the "good life" per say or that it's all hunky dory. They still face WEATHER, parasites, predators, starvation, etc... every day is survival, eat or be eaten essentially. :pop

Well, their still farming all the corn to make our chicken feeds, thereby still destroying the earth and it's wildlife and habitats.

I thought quail eggs were hypoallergenic?? :pop

Naming birds doesn't stop me from processing. :drool Sometimes they even go to freezer camp with their name on the label. It has brought me a lot closer to my food and understanding of what it takes to make it in addition to appreciation for the market price I pay! Of course it's always good to follow the law... so, don't let a neighborhood kid see you murdering and chicken! Hate for their parents to have to explain that's how chicken nuggets (in theory :sick) start.

quite frankly Americans are too lazy and cheap to do it.
And some are less fortunate renters who don't have permission from the land lord. Others are disabled and can't care for themselves much less a chicken. Some are taking care of those disabled, or aging parents, teenage kids, and working to pay their rent. Taking care of a garden or tending animals and cleaning MORE poop may not be their idea of feasible. For some folks... keeping even hens is against the ordinance. :hmm

And it straight sucks that it cost more to raise my own meat AND eggs! But that's the truth... plus sometimes I loose birds to predators, hens molt and go broody or don't mature quickly... no meat or eggs during that time. How amazing is it that we do have that consistency of sustenance available year round?!

Maybe if cost went up, factory farms could buy more land to give more space per animal.. and folks who don't wanna pay can raise their own... if they can afford to buy their own land etc. Where does that leave folks who are already struggling to feed themselves, forgoing their own medications sometimes? Arg... big pharma... I digress...

Buying direct from farms creates liability and likely adds to the current regulation nightmares.

Point is... it seems multifaceted.

Good for you for trying to make some small difference! :highfive:

100% agree that wild animals do not have a good life. but am going to say its better then being forced feed have 1 foot of movement space and lack any natural Behavior. but life is cruel for them. i mean deer fawns get eaten alive by coyotes i think a quick instant death from a hunter is much more humane.

but am totally agreeing with you that they don't have the so called "good life"

I would hatch chicks and give them to someone who couldn't afford to buy what they needed if they want to raise their own. Although you brought up some good points, I still believe that people don't care and as long as meat comes in nice store wrap, they don't have to face what goes on behind the scene. I've had people tell me they won't buy my eggs because they don't come from the store. Now if that doesn't tell you something...

Truer words were never spoken.
Big Ag has us right where they want us.
The thinking of modern humans in this environment is inextricably altered from what it was just a measly 100 years ago.

Eaten alive? Is that like....true?

i wish it was not but it is.

i was hunting this last spring on a ranch, and the guy was telling us how the bears/coyotes and wolves, would pull a calf out of the mother (while she was giving birth) and eat them while there where still living till of course they died due to blood loss or shock.
