The Welsummer Thread!!!!

What are you using for a roost? I use a 2x4 on flat side and my welsummers use it with no problems. I have 3 roost boards 8' long and 18" apart located 48" from the ground with a small ladder going up to a roost.

Mine also use a 2X4 on edge, but they would much prefer a 2x4 wide side up. (did that in my 2nd coop)

I have a ladder type roost set up with roosts at 2, 3.5, and 5 foot high. But I used 1x2 on edge, so narrow roost....
I guess I will try 2x4's. Just checked out the house and noted that the birds love sitting on the railing of the deck around the house, whick is a 2x4... so that solves it. I hope they all get up there, they must be tired of having other birds perched over them~

We converted the kids (now in their 20's) old play house into the hen house. They roost is up in the play house and the run is underneath, in the old sandbox area. We secured the area with fencing and it works well for our backyard chicks! They freerange all day in the yard (about .7 acres) and I think we all just Love it!

I'm soooooo doing that with my kids playhouse when they are old enough to move away! Ours is very similar to yours.

Yesterday I talked with havinfun about chickens. It's great knowing that there are others who think Welsummers are as special as I do.
