Things you wish you could say

What do people here like about duckduckgo, or not like about it? What other search engines do people use?

Tech dummy here, so dumb it down for me, please.
This is the list that you can choose from in FireFox.

If you are shopping on Wikipedia, eBay or Amazon, you may want to use their search engines. Otherwise, I would stay with one of the big three, Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo. Each search engine uses different ways of sorting and prioritizing the results that they give you and each has its own biases. Google used to be pretty good, but they've been getting more and more biased, it seems.

I believe that Yahoo! still has its own search engine as well. I don't know if AltaVista is still an option or not. I know I liked them once upon a time.

Well, now I know i piss a lot of people off!

I don't use dog after breed or cheese after queso, but the rest??

Hamburger meat was a "staple term" when I was growing up. My family is probably spinning in their graves - we now eat ground lamb, ground goat & we grind the pork to make sausage...🤣

It’s much more privacy oriented. I am a huge advocate for data diversity in that I don’t think one platform should have your email, search history, passwords, fitness watch data, photos, etc. (Fitbit is owned by Google btw.) The main reason I use DuckDuckGo is well, it isn’t Google. It’s got decent customization options but, well, it’s very simple. I don’t have to mess with things I don’t want to. Simple enough to switch the engine in a few clicks on any browser or to download their dedicated app (which has fun features like one click cookie/history clearing, something I think should be done regularly.)

I find the search results to be more relevant too, and less full of SEO-optimized AI crap, i.e. something that does well in search rankings but has little useful information. Google has a lot of that. It does have AI summaries now but it can be turned off.

Don’t use Chrome as a browser either. Also a google product. Unless you want to use another email host like ProtonMail and then use Google for web searches… that’s personal choice, I like gmail enough that I would rather use an alternative for search engines.
