This chicken is not dead

These babies drop dead at the slightest opportunity, then wake up and fly around, then drop dead again :p

Miraculously alive and treating me like a jungle gym

She seems OK this morning, walking and drinking (I didn’t see her eating). The hawk ripped all the feathers off one cheek so she’s only half fluffy today (she’s an Ameraucana). Her eye is also still swollen shut, although it doesn’t look damaged when I open it gently.
This is the first time in the 5 months I’ve had her that this bird has let me anywhere near her without screaming ☹️
Poor wee girl, hope she will be ok.

Oh no! How scary! My silkie cockerel was attacked by a hawk last Fall, he fought and I ran out to rescue him. He was ok. I gained 1,000 new grey hairs!
She’s the second bird I’ve had attacked by the hawks, the first one got away unscathed. This girl will be blind on her right side, but she’s feisty as heck!

That is good to hear. Are you sure the eye will not heal? Animals are more though then us humans, they adapt way better than we do.

I can open the eyelid, but she won’t open it so I’m assuming she doesn’t see?
There could be a bad tear in the eyeball, that would be super painful. Can you get some eye ointment? Do you have a Vet you can get some? Some antibiotic eye ointment will help it heal and soothe it. You can also give some infant liquid Tylenol for any pain. Dose is 10mg/kg weight of bird (1kg is 2.2lbs). Twice a day (every 12hrs).

These chooks of ours sure like to cause use stress don’t they! From playing dead to almost getting killed by predators - they sure do keep us hopping! I never would have thought chooks would be as much stress as the horses!
