Hi, I appreciate any advice you can offer.
The weather has taken a turn here and become hot, really hot. I have always chosen my hens to be as heat tolerant as possible. Hence I have a leghorn cross. Big wattles so stays cool. This works fine, she is fine and happy however her wattles ar not coping so well. They are dry and pinky white. She desperately needs a face pack and large quantities of deeply nourishing moisturiser.
I’ve heard that coconut oil or Vaseline does the job but I’m concerned that her wattles may fry in all that oil.
Any ideas ? She’s not a shade type girl, loves a bit of sun and follows me around the garden or waits outside the door for me, in the sun 🤷‍♀️ very cute but none too bright.
Advice would be appreciated

Do you spray a shady area with water? That's how I've been cooling my chickens down. I have no other choice and my EE have very tiny wattles. It got up to 107 yesterday, it's been over 100 for two weeks straight, and soaking the ground wherever there is shade around the coop has made all the difference for them.

I'm sorry, you said she doesn't like shade. Perhaps you could spray sunny spots too or put a hose sprinkler on somewhere? Some people suggest tiny pools for chickens to walk in too, but mine won't do it.

I would not oil the comb or wattles in hot sunny weather. I would make sure that she is in the shade during the hottest times of the day, and place pans of cool shaded water around the area where they all hang out

We have a wood and lots of area for her to go in the shade, she doesn’t seem to overheat, herself, as she’s not panting and her arms aren’t out. I have a mister with a large tray of water underneath kept cold with ice packs.
It’s her wattles I’m concerned about really and how to moisturise them. Maybe when she goes to bed I could use something but I don’t know what would be best ?

Oh okay. Idk, if I were you, I would give her Hen Boost for a couple of days and see if it helps. Maybe give her protein treats too. Might not be an issue of external stress but internal insufficiency. If nothing changes, then try a moisturizer.
