Turn A 3 or 5 Gallon Bucket Into A Waterer! These are Great!

I looked at these also, but wasn't sure how hard it would be to have to turn a 50 pound bucket with water over without the red base coming off or spilling it everywhere. Does it work allright for you.

It's not too difficult. You have to be quick and hold it on there while you flip it. You can also use a 3 gallon pail which isn't as heavy to lift and flip over. I use 5 gallon just so I don't have to refill as often.

Is that just a standard 5 gallon bucket with a snap on lid? How tight does the base stay on? If you were to make a handle on the bottom of the bucket, would the base stay on well enough to hang the unit without it falling off or leaking?

I use a 5 gallon bucket as well for both water and a feeder. I put them both on a wooden pallet with hardware cloth stapled to the pallets, that way, the hens can walk around the buckets and it keeps it cleaner around the area, the dirt falls in between the screen. I got metal pans from Tractor Supply for $3.99 each, i put one pan upside down on the tops of the 5 gallon buckets as well, as the hens like to hop on top of them, this keeps the poop from dropping in the food/water. Has worked out wonderfully. The feed tends to "get stuck" when it gets low so I found an oil funnel at an auto store, it has a screen at the tip, i flipped it upside down to help guide the feed better out of the holes in the bottom of bucket, so far its working really well.

It is just a standard 5 gallon bucket. The lid doesn't actually snap onto the bucket. It just sits on top of it and the vacuum and weight of the water holds it in place. I wondered how well it would actually work also but after several months of using them I still like them a lot. You couldn't hang them from a handle because the bottom wouldn't stay on. I do like that idea though. Wish the bottom was a tighter fit. Oh well nothing is perfect but these are pretty cheap and work well for me.
