completely new to having baby chicks. Went to clean the brooder out and one of them was dead underneath the heating plate. It didn’t look like there was any trauma. I am not sure what happened. The body looked a little bit flat like all the other chicks, just trampled over it. Maybe after it died. So I’m not sure how it died. So I thought maybe they had pasty butt. So I went through and checked all of them after cleaning the brooder. And one of them had what looked like pasty butt, but I’m guessing I was looking in the wrong section. and the umbilical cord is what I think got pulled out. And then this happened. The chick did die. And I feel so bad. I don’t know what were wrong. Looking for advice. I believe they are three or four days old. According to what the person who sold them to me said.

Welcome to BYC and sorry for your losses. : hugs The scab is the umbilicus and it's very easy to pull their yolk and intestines out. Try not to beat yourself up too much, this has happened to me too. :hugs
Thank you for answering. I feel so bad for the little guy. And it’s still bothering me that I don’t know what happened to the other baby chick. Fingers crossed the other 10 make it.

You're welcome. I still feel bad for mine too, but we get to educate others, right?

Can you post a picture of your chicks? If you can do that, I might be able to spot any that are struggling.
